The Imperial Military makes extensive use of ranks and rank plaques. Red, blue and yellow are used. Red is traditionally indicative of the Imperial Army while Blue is traditionally indicative of the Imperial Navy. Yellow traditionally has a special connotation to it; notably for operations ranks. The quickest way to differentiate between Imperial Army and Imperial Navy personnel is to look at the top color of their rank plaques. Imperial Army officers have red first and Imperial Navy officers have blue first.

Code cylinders were issued to Imperial officers as necessary. Code cylinders were often issued in either 1, 2 or 4 and never more than 4. Code cylinders contained sensitive information about the wearer, access levels as well as additional information as necessary. Code cylinders issued to members of the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy were issued in Red and Blue levels. Blue was issued to members at the rank of Colonel/Senior Captain and above, Red was issued to members as the rank of Second Lieutenant/Ensign and above. Some code cylinders were issued without levels and just a silver top.

Operations ranks[]
"Operations" ranks were worn by staff officers assigned to non-combat roles within the Imperial military. In addition these officers were referred to as "Operations Officers" or a number of other titles and sometimes chose to wear "Operations" ranks in place of the normal rank plaques. Operations ranks with a red rank indicated assignment to the Imperial Army whereas the a blue rank indicated assignment to the Imperial Navy or specialist assignment.
